Caramel Deluxe

Three Stars
Caramel Deluxe
The Caramel Deluxe is an interesting biscuit. On paper it would appear to be a fantastic biscuit. Made up of a chocolate biscuit with a caramel layer, topped off with a chocolate coating. Sounds good, right? Unfortunately Coles skimped on the quality of many of these elements, leaving a boring and dull biscuit. The problem starts with the caramel flavoured layer that the Caramel Deluxe contains. Although it has a fantastic thick texture and little or no graininess it tastes wrong; instead of a nice sugary burnt taste it instead tastes of artificial ingredients and chemicals.

The chocolate used, at least in the packet that I tried, was hard and crumbly, with very little softness as I would have preferred. The biscuit inside of the Caramel Deluxe was OK but nothing special, it serves only as a platform for the rest of the ingredients to build onto. The chocolate was of poor quality and, much like the caramel, had a strange fake taste to it. However the biscuits taste when all of these elements combined is simply just mediocre. However when bitten into the biscuit had a fantastic soft, melt in your mouth texture and feel which does make up for some of its shortcomings regarding its ingredients.

I cannot recommend this biscuit wholeheartedly. Although it is an OK biscuit overall this is just not a good enough product to make the cut. The price is also a sticking factor with these biscuits. For $2.51 there are many better alternatives, including Woolworths own Rocky Road Mallows. For the price that they are being offered at, and considering the quality of the Caramel Deluxe, there is no good reason that you should purchase them over any of the competing brands, Woolworths or otherwise.
